This video has a really strong opening which grabs the attention of the viewer straight away. The shots at the beginning all fade into each other really smoothly, the transitions are very effective. The video is memorable because there are a lot of close ups of the artist singing the song. These shots stick in your mind because the colour is very saturated and the shot shows only the singers face making you focus completely on them. I think the time of day that they filmed the footage also makes the video very memorable as there are some shots which are filmed at sunset/night which reflects the atmosphere of the music.
The video definitely meets the Advanced Criteria. All of the shots are steady and well framed, especially the close ups and the shots of people dancing and waving ribbons. There is a large variety of shot distances as there are extreme close ups of the artist but then long shots of the whole band. We also see medium shots of separate members of the band. Appropriate material for the video has been shot and is evident throughout, the mise-en-scene also conforms with the conventions of the genre of music (rock) that they have chosen. The lead female artist fits the part with her costume however some of the other costumes are not as good. The setting they have chosen is really effective as there are lots of lights around to set the atmosphere.
Most of the shot transitions they have used are fade ins/out but they have also used simple cuts between shots.
Some of the lip syncing at the very end of the video is slightly out of sync but the rest all looks really good. I think they should have used more of this as it is a bit stronger than some of their other footage. The continuity of the video is a bit random as the light changes half way through the video. They have obviously started filmig in daylight and carried on until it has got dark but jumbled up the order of their filming. The footage looks better and more professional in the dark.
This music video has inspired me to use more varied shot types to imprive our music video and to use different transitions between shots rather than simple cuts.
